Prayer Walk

John 15:7

“If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”

This week, I want to share with you specific ways that you can build prayer into your daily life. If you are like me, prayer can feel less important in the moment than doing. I can easily make prayer an “if I have time” rather than an “I must make time” aspect of my life.

Over the next few days, I want to introduce you to intentional ways that you can carve out space for prayer. Our first practice is a prayer walk.

Walking is one of the most beneficial practices you can choose. Walking benefits your physical body, your mental wellness, your brain health, and even your spiritual health (Lead with Prayer, p. 19).

Today, I encourage you to find a time to take a walk for 10–15 minutes, preferably alone. This can be done during a lunch break, once you get home, after a meal, or early tomorrow morning.

Tips for praying during your walk:

  1. Invite Jesus to join you. (It may feel silly, but actually pray this invitation to declare your desire.)

  2. Admire the beauty of creation as you stroll along.

  3. List things you are thankful for in your life right now.

  4. Repeat a simple phrase like “God, I need you” or “God, I love you, and I know you love me.”

  5. Pray for someone you see as you walk.

  6. Share a pressing struggle, worry, fear, or challenge.

  7. Listen to music softly to put you in a state of worship.

This is not meant primarily for exercise, so do not walk at a pace that is distracting or exhausting. The purpose is to “waste time” with God.
