What captures your joy?

Did you read the caption?

I could show you loads of men celebrating a touchdown, jumping for joy, hands raised, or even on their knees crying.

I have only seen a handful of men do anything similar in worship.

Philippians 2:10 states: "so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth."

When Abraham encountered God, he fell on his face. Moses bowed in worship, and Isaiah cried out in confession before the holiness of God!

Psalm 134:2 calls us to "lift up your hands to the holy place and bless the Lord."

Today, I write not about expressive worship, but about how our expressions overflow from the things we worship.

Now, outward expression isn't always an accurate measurement of inward devotion, but it can reveal something about what captures our hearts.

When my team scores, I cannot help but react with enthusiasm.

When Carlin comes out of the dressing room in a new dress, I cannot help but compliment her.

When Cooper finishes a baseball game, I cannot help but encourage him.

Our worship flows naturally into expression. John Piper has famously written, "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him."

Whether that is the beauty of a spouse, the touchdown of our team, the finishing of a project, or the taste of 16-hour smoked BBQ, we cannot contain our excitement and joy.

I am not writing to beat you up or take the easy road of conviction by saying you love the Cowboys or Crimson Tide more than you love the Creator. We all battle that.

I am not even telling you to stop celebrating or enjoying the things of this world.

As your pastor, my hope is to give you a taste of God that you cannot help but express enthusiasm for. My hope is to introduce you to a God who knows you and loves you. To a salvation that requires nothing but faith in Jesus Christ. To a heavenly home that is more beautiful and perfect than words can describe.

I want to teach you about God in such a way that you aren't forcing yourself to enjoy Him, but rather, you cannot get enough of Him.

I am on this same journey, but what an amazing day it will be when the One I long for most is the One who loves me most perfectly!
